The Genetics and Public Policy Center is supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts, with research funding from the National Human Genome Research Institute and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
The Center was established in 2002 with $10 million in funding from The Pew Charitable Trusts; its first Pew-funded project was the Reproductive Genetics Initiative. In 2005 the Center received a $3 million grant from Pew to launch a new initiative on genetic testing quality.
From 2006 through 2008, the Center is conducting a $2 million research project funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute, "Making Every Voice Count: Public Consultation on Genetics, Environment, and Health." The Center also is conducting a similar engagement project for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs focused on its Genomic Medicine Program. In 2007 Genetic Alliance partnered with the Center on a three-year project funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration to help assess parents' attitudes and educational needs surrounding newborn screening.
